Mayan Peten Short Cylinder – Seated Figures

Sold

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala, Peten region, ca. 550 to 900 CE. An attractive hand-built terracotta cylinder on a concave foot, the exterior walls decorated with a pair of figures, each one seated, looking upward, and dramatically leaning forward with outstretched arms in a gesture of supplication, both delineated in black fine lines and colored with red and golden umber hues. Upon closer examination it becomes evident that each figure is wearing large earspools as well as lower garments with a spotted pattern suggesting associations with the might of the esteemed jaguar. The theatrical hand gestures and gaze toward the celestial realm may indicate a transmission of power to the seated figures. Above and below the registers are defined by fine black striations. A lovely example. Size: 5.125″ in diameter x 4.25″ H (13 cm x 10.8 cm)

Condition: Stabilized cracks to the base. Normal surface wear with pigment loss as shown. Covered with root marks. Inventory label on base.

Provenance: ex-private southern California, USA collection
