Early Mexican Carved Wooden Madonna & Child- Lot 48, Auction 7/1/2019

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand carved and painted wooden santo depicting the Virgin Mary and a praying Baby Jesus. Mary wears cut tin tall crown and possesses a delicately contoured face with striking black eyes framed by long lashes and arched brows. Her vestments are detailed with floral and foliated motifs. The Christ Child presses his palms together in a prayerful gesture. Both figures are carved in a quaint simple yet elegant folk style. Size: 11.75″ H (29.8 cm)

Condition: Mary’s right hand and base missing. Normal surface wear and paint loss as shown.
