The ancient Near East refers to early civilizations extending from the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea to present-day Afghanistan - Mesopotamia (modern Iraq and Syria), Persia (Iran), Anatolia (Turkey), the Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, and Jordan), and Ancient Egypt, from the rise of Sumer in the 4th millennium B.C., until the region's conquest by Alexander the Great in the 4th century B.C.
