DescriptionWooden Mortar from Papua New Guinea, Massim region, ca. 19th century. Carved wooden implement with incised linear designs accented with kaolin clay against a dark surface. Used to crush lime powder for in preparation of areca and betel nut mixture, traditionally ingested for its mild narcotic properties. Massim valuables often consisted of ceremonial versions of ordinary objects. 6"H x 1-1/2"D, in excellent condition with typical signs of use.
