DescriptionAbsolutely stunning! Ancient Greco-Roman Plaque, carved in low relief, with satyrs dancing as they crush grapes to make wine. On the right, with a basket of grapes, is their leader Silenos, a Roman, probably by Greek artists. Molded terracotta, ca. 1st century B.C – 1st century A.D. Remains of original pigment. Custom mount. 17-1/2”W x 12”H x 1-1/4”D, intact/excellent condition, all original pigment. Published in the book, Wine Appreciation and Abuse in Ancient Greece, by Kons. I. Fallerios. An important piece, one of only a small handful known to exist, with one nearly-identical example on display at the Houston Museum of Art.
