DescriptionA beauty! Ancient Roman - Late Hellenistic Transport Amphora, ca. 100 B.C. Dressel 1B type amphora, fine, rare torpedo-shape terracotta clay vessel with long cylindrical neck with two elegant side handles, and pointed base. Used in the late Greek/Roman era to transport wine along ports in the Mediterranean Sea. Found at the bottom of the sea in 1929 off the coast of Spain, complete with barnacles. Heavy, hand-forged, custom iron stand. Vessel itself measures 34"H x 17"W; with stand 54"H. Vase is intact with only minor rim chipping, and small chip to base as shown. ProvenanceAcquired in the early 1920s by previous owner's grandfather in Catalonia (Barcelona province), then gifted to son in early 1970s.
