Greek South Italic Bichrome Pottery Kothon- Lot 186, Auction 1/29/2018

Sold

Magna Graecia, South Italy, ca. 4th century BCE. A large kothon (also called a plemochoe or exaleiptron) with a sinuous loop handle just below the rounded rim, all on a raised ring base. Adding to its attractive form is the beautiful painted color scheme of chocolate brown on a cream hued ground – the rounded rim adorned with a fretted register surrounded by linear and dotted bands. Such vessels were essentially ancient air fresheners created to contain fragrant substances to imbue a space with sweet smelling aromas. Size: 7.25″ in diameter x 2.375″ H (18.4 cm x 6 cm)

Condition: Expected surface wear with nicks here and there and pigment loss commensurate with age. Chips to base and handle. Encrusted areas to underside of base.

Provenance: private New Jersey USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
