Lot 83, Auction 2/1/2018: Gorgeous 18th C. Japanese Edo Bronze Niello Vase

Asia, Japan, late Edo Period, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A vase made of bronze, with niello (a mixture of copper, silver, and lead sulphates with a black color, often inlaid or engraved) floral decorations, both inlaid and in low relief. High up on one side is a soaring bird. Sparing gilt is used around the surface to highlight certain leaves. The vase has a flared, round foot that is symmetrical with a flared, wide-mouth spout and rim. Two handles project from the sides, with zoomorphic flourishes. A gorgeous example of Japanese metalwork. Size: 5.15" L x 4.25" W x 8.4" H (13.1 cm x 10.8 cm x 21.3 cm)

Condition: Handles are slightly loose; they are made from different pieces of metal and attached. Possible very tiny area of repair on the base/low on the foot. Dark patina on surface, with much gilt remaining.
