DescriptionFabulous ancient Egyptian Cowroid Scarab dating to the New Kingdom period, 18th Dynasty, ca. 1479-1425 B.C., reign of Thutmosis III, often called the "Napoleon of Egypt." Dominated early in his reign by his stepmother Hatshepsut; after she died, Thutmosis began expanding Egyptian rule into the Levant. Large cowroid scarab of green glazed steatite, in lozenge form decorated on both sides inscribed on one side with cartouche and glyphs translated as - "Beautiful god, lord of the two lands." The king depicted as standing lion with the head of a hawk. Reverse inscribed with the horns and ears of the cow, sacred to Hathor, goddess of beauty, love and joy, protected by four uraeus cobras. Measuring 17mm x 12mm, intact and near-choice with tiny chip on each side of suspension hole. Extremely rare example!
