Lot 165, Auction 11/27/2017: Early 20th C. European Brass Church Chandelier - Angels

Western Europe, ca. early 20th century CE. Made from thin brass sheet, this is a shimmering brass chandelier made for use in a church. It consists of a large lower font with a dangling florate finial, three chains, and bell-shaped canopy with a thick ring for hanging it from a ceiling. Inside the font are attachments for placing three candles. Size: 13" W x 140" H (33 cm x 355.6 cm)

Riveted around the top of the round lamp are three brass angels with cherubic faces and splayed wings. Around the upper part of the lamp is a ring of cross and shield motifs; below that is a ring of other symbols like the tablets containing the Ten Commandments, a stylized book, and a pyramid radiating light (possibly a reference to Freemasonry, a common iconographic form at this time). Below that is a ring of floral and vine motifs and the finial. Imagine the brass illuminating a dark room with its reflection.

Condition: Expected age wear/patina, especially on interior. Candle holders are gone.

Provenance: Ex-private T. Jones collection, New York, NY
