Early 18th C. Greek Wood Icon - Christ Pantokrator

$2,495.00
Eastern Europe, Greece, ca. 1700 CE. A painted wood icon of Christ Pantokrator, also known as Christ Enthroned. Christ sits in the center, with his right hand in the traditional "IC-XC" (the abbreviation of Jesus Christ in Greek) blessing and, in his left hand, an open Book of the Gospels. In the shape of the arms of the cross inside his halo are the Greek letters that abbreviate his name. Around him are a variety of saints, apostles, His mother, and prophets, all with their halos labeled with their names. The image is set within a painted wood border. Size: 11.95" W x 14.05" H (30.4 cm x 35.7 cm)

The term "Pantokrator" translates to "Ruler of All", "All Powerful", or "Lord of Hosts", and is a common icon in the Orthodox Church, often occupying the dome of a church over the altar. The earliest prototype of this icon is from Palermo, Italy, and pre-dates the 15th century CE. It is rarer to find an example like this one, with the additional figures.

Condition: Craquelure on surface, with darkening to pigment. Very small losses, especially on the upper and lower right. Back slats are present and in good condition.

Provenance: Ex-private Ventura County, CA collection
