DescriptionAncient Pre-Columbian Gold Disc from the north coast of Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 - 200 B.C. Of sheet gold in circular form (decorative symbol for the sun), relief detailing formed by hammering from the underside (repousse) to create abstract camelids. Without the typical piercings for thread, ornaments like this would have been attached with tree resin to the center of a man's garment or shield. Works of hammered sheet gold are usually higher in gold content than are cast objects. Many pectoral disks, also called patenas, are striking in their simplicity with brilliantly polished, highly-reflective surfaces. 3-7/8"D x 5-1/4"H including custom mount, intact/choice condition.
