Byzantine 24K Gold / Crystal Ring, ex-Gorny & Mosch

Byzantium, ca. 6th to 9th century CE. Breathtakingly beautiful, a high karat (24 kt) gold ring presenting an elegant design comprised of a generous shank made from three soldered gold wires, each one adorned with a row of granules, a raised bezel decorated with eight evenly spaced granules on the flat border and containing a large round quartz crystal cabochon. A gorgeous example of wearable art from the Byzantine era. US Ring Size: 6.5; Total Weight: 6.2 grams. Size: opening measures .875" in diameter (2.2 cm); shank measures just about .25" W (0.6 cm); stone measures .375" in diameter (1 cm) and .5" in diameter (1.3 cm) with surrounding gold border; bezel and stone measure .375" H (1 cm) from the shank

Condition: Bezel and shank show areas of bending and wear commensurate with age. It appears that both the stone and the ring are ancient. It also appears that at some point the stone may have fallen out and a section of the reflective material beneath it was lost. The stone was later refitted.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Gorny & Mosch, accompanying tag reads A214 - 152
