Lot 8g, Auction 9/14/2017: Pair of Large Northern Greek Bronze Bracelets

Greece, Geometric Period, ca. 7th century BCE. A pair of gorgeous coiled bronze bracelets, each with overlapping and slightly tapered ends, carinated on the interior and the exterior and decorated on the exterior with engraved linear designs. Comes with custom display stand for both as shown. Size of each bracelet: 3" W (7.6 cm); height on stand: 5" (12.7 cm).

During the Geometric Period, Greek society became more stratified, and personal status - as well as items of quality used to demonstrate it to others - became important. Visual arts and material culture flourished, particularly in the form and decoration of ceramic items, and the casting of fine metal objects like these bracelets. These would have been worn by an elite woman - paintings of women on vases often show them wearing multiple bracelets - and probably accompanied her into the grave.

See a very similar bracelet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1998.25).

Condition: Smooth green patina overall.
