Lot 300, Auction 5/30/2017: 20th C. Oceanic Wooden War Club - Solomon Islands

Oceania, Solomon Islands, ca. early 20th century CE. A small war club made of light wood, with incised geometric and eye-like designs on the diamond-shaped club body and a smoothed handle terminating in a flanged, pyramidal hilt. Size: 17.15" L x 3" W (43.6 cm x 7.6 cm)

Prior to the arrival of Europeans in the South Pacific islands - which was the mid-19th century in a serious way with missionaries arriving in the Solomons - large wooden war clubs were a prominent weapon. They continued to be produced for ceremonial purposes, and to demonstrate the wealth and social standing of their owner.

Condition: Wear to surface with some light scratching to the artwork, especially near the tip of the club.

Provenance: Ex-Hagar Collection
