DescriptionEdgar Cayce, Jean Dixon, Nostradamus, and Bob Dodge – what do these names all have in common? These individuals are all regarded as the greatest psychics of all time. It’s just that Bob, here-to-fore, has been the only one to consider himself such. After this last week’s “psychic blog,” that will all soon change!
For those of you who enjoy, or actually read, my weekly (that’s an approximation) ramblings, you might remember that last week I wrote about the 2 big Ethnographic shows in Santa Fe. My prognostication was that these shows would be a great place to buy, but not a great place to sell. Boy did I hit this one right! Can we say shooting fish in a barrel? Okay, perhaps this wasn’t the toughest prediction I have ever had to make in my life, but I don’t remember seeing anyone else publishing any predictions on the topic – especially the show organizers!
If you were a seller at either of these shows, you probably walked away muttering to yourself “damn this show sucked.” Most of the dealers we talked to indicated this was the worst show they can ever remember. Most also admitted that they probably were going to be lucky if the covered the cost of their booth. A point of fact to keep in mind; most dealers by their nature are either very experienced at stretching the truth just a “wee” bit, or are egotistical maniacs who hate to disclose they are not the Warren Buffets of the antiquity realm. For these megalomaniacal prevaricators to actually admit they had a bad show probably really means they are ready to take a long walk off a very short pier – if Santa Fe had such.
This is not to say that there were a few heavy hitters who attended the show. And it is certainly not to say that some of these heavy hitters dropped what most would consider small fortunes to enhance their collections. But these heavy hitters were very few and far between, and the small hitters seemed to be completely absent. Gone were the buyers of nice smaller items that might have made up a good portion of revenue in years past. Truth be told, most of the activity at the show came from dealers doing deals with fellow dealers. Some of the hottest activity came in the last hour of the show when it was not unusual to watch a piece trade hands 3 or more times as one dealer would buy a piece, and turn around and sell (or trade) that same piece to another dealer – sometimes all within a matter of minutes.
You might be asking yourself – “self, I wonder how Artemis gallery did at the show…?” Well let me answer that question. Artemis sold little, bought WAY too much! But at the prices we found things, we would have been nuts NOT to buy! And our good fortune may very well be your good fortune. Keep an eye out for great buys in our new additions. What a shameless plug!
Happy collecting!
Bob
