DescriptionLast week I talked about 2010. I think, for most of us, it turned out to be a pretty decent year after all. Wouldn’t have given you a tin nickel for it January of last year! But things this January are far rosier, bargains can still be had, old buyers are slowly emerging from hibernation and the sun is shining (tomorrow a foot of snow expected here in Colorado, but today, not so bad…)
5. I will remove those items from my collection that no longer fit. Out with the tired old, in with the new hotness… 6. I will do even more research on the cultures that hold the greatest interest to me so I know more about the people that made these wonderful pieces of art. I might even take a course at CU (University of Colorado) in Anthropology to really understand what it was like when this art was created 7. I will take more time to smell the ancient roses. I will spend more time enjoying what I have and less time obsessing over what I need to buy. When possible, in my travels I will see every museum in my vicinity – even if (heaven forbid) they don’t even showcase ancient art. 8. I will endeavor to get more involvement from my darling wife in our collection. I am lucky that Teresa has an appreciation of ancient art, but her appreciation is sometimes more pecuniary than mine. This year, I will seek her opinion both from an artistic standpoint … and an investment standpoint. 9. I will ensure our collection is protected better. I will make sure every piece is photographed, documented, and insured at today’s value. Based on what we just saw at auction, I would say good examples of ancient art have certainly appreciated this past year. 10. I will make sure each piece is properly cared for. I will look at the condition of each piece to see if it needs any type of additional conservation. As caretaker of irreplaceable art, I will ensure it passes to the next generation in as good as or better condition than when I received it. I’m sure there are many other things I should endeavor to do with our personal antiquities collection this year, but I have heard one should keep their resolutions down to a manageable (and achievable) level. My personal goals for this year are to exercise more and eat better. I think eating organic brownies on the treadmill qualifies, don’t you? Happy collecting! Bob |
