Rare Jalisco Bi-Chrome Dog Effigy Vessel- Lot 130, Auction 9/27/2018

Sold

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Most collectors of Pre-Columbian pottery are familiar with puppies coming from the Colima region. This more unusual puppy hails from Jalisco, and while similar to Colima dogs, there are distinct differences, particularly in the shape of the face and ears. Comprised of hollow-molded terracotta and adorned in red slip with white stripes, this canine stands on all fours with its plump form and perky tail – quite eager in its countenance. Her visage is simply adorable with round eyes, a pointed snout, a central ridge extending from forehead to tip of nose, slightly parted mouth as if smiling, and raised ears. Rather than a typical spout, her left ear has a large hole at the base through which liquids could be poured. Size: 12.75″ L x 8.75″ H (32.4 cm x 22.2 cm)

Condition: Chips to edges of ears, tips of feet, and tail. Surface wear commensurate with age with some pigment loss and abraded areas as shown. Nice mineral deposits.

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection
