Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE. A delightful wooden sculpture of an androgynous figure. The figure has elaborate clothing that the artist has taken pains to carve, with a long bustle on the back of the short skirt, a huge hanging belt, a necklace and headdress that mirror the shape of the belt, and various other pieces of jewelry and clothing details. The figure is carved in the round, with a rectangular pedestal. He or she stands with knees slightly bent and one hand pressed to the chest; the other reaches toward the back. The face has huge eyes and a small nose and mouth. Bright pigment, especially blue, is still on some of the clothing and the headdress. Comes with custom stand. Condition: Expected age wear to wood, with loss to hand on front and loss to back corner of pedestal. Some pigment remains, especially around the hair.
