17th C. Russian Bronze Crucifix - Extensive Iconography

Russia, ca. 17th century CE. A special antique Russian Orthodox bronze cross embellished with detailed low relief. Beyond the aesthetic beauty of this piece, is its extensive iconographic program adorning the front side and lengthy Cyrillic prayer on the back. On the front we see the crucifixion of the Son of God. Above this is Christ the Savior flanked by a pair of angels, below a skull representing Golgotha or Skull Hill, the location where Adam was reportedly buried and Christ was crucified. Turn it over, and the program continues with a prayer. All finely cast, remarkably detailed. A lovely work of religious art with an integral loop for suspension on verso. Size: 3" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 12.7 cm)

Condition: Loss to left side of one arm of the cross as shown.

Provenance: Ex-private Orange County, CA collection
